The Sacrohn Report– Review by Alan Procter

Following the European campaign, that might be out of sequence. I got two copies of the Sacrohn Final report, one from MEP Linda Mcavan. This one restricted itself to the detection of MAP.

I received another version, that does not seem to have been published widely, from the central Science Laboratory here in Yorkshire, England.

I would like to see this report  circulated, because there are some things they found that decision makers need to debate, and that peer groups need to evaluate.

So here for the first time in public are some of their findings.

1) The study found that MAP is found in water, soil, vegetables, animals, milk and milk products.

2) Genetic predisposition studies showed that the majority of crohns patients carried  NOD2.Card15 Mutations.

3) In crohns MAP was detected in 70% of cases.

4) There is an increasing evidence that crohns and sarcoidosis may have an infectious etiology.

5) When clinical material from crohns patients was inoculated into rabbits, histological lesions resulted. MAP was detected both in the lesions and clinical material, indicating MAP implication.

SACROHN suggested a prevention strategy that includes, and concludes

1) Identification of genetically predisposed populations.

2) The elimination, or ideally the removal of viable or dead mycobacteria from the food chain. Since mycobacteria  probably comprise a trigger for sarcoisosis and crohns, their presence in the environment could be perilous for people who are genetically predisposed to these diseases. MAP cells survive pasteurization.

3) In spite of abundant indications, due to their multifactorial tiology, we cannot definitely point to the causative factor of sarcoidosis and crohns disease without a large scale clinical, and case control studies covering all factors.

I would like the Sacrohn Report to be published and a debate started about some of the alarming issues it raises, to encourage further research.

When will the SACROHN Report be Published?
