Test found MAP in Milk |
|
Following the decision to test uk milk for MAP, I decided to form a pressure group. The idea was to get more people involved and make representations where possible. We decided to call it shits international, but it was inappropriate. At the time there was a zero tolerance of violence campaign going on. So, why not have zero tolerance of s**t, Zhitz. The rest is history, milk tested positive. The average UK citizen who drank a carton of milk a day, would drink 3 a year contaminated with MAP. The government took action, zhitz International took part in the consultations. There were a series of interesting meetings and a report was produced by Eileen Rubery, of Cambridge. Eventually the government decided to get MAP out of food, as a precautionary measure. I then turned my attention to Europe, the source of most of our food laws in the UK. There are 500,000 crohns victims in Europe. I got a couple of our MEP’s to ask a total of four questions about crohns in the European Parliament. The main response of the European Commission to the MAP problem was a research programme called SACROHN. This project was to look for improved diagnostic procedures for crohns, sarcoidosis and johnes disease. I stopped public campaigning when I became a director of Leeds Cooperative Society. The consumer owned business sold milk, there was a conflict of interest. In theory the UK should now have milk and beef that is free from MAP. A considerable amount of time and effort has gone into this. I hope it has worked? I have a copy of the SACROHN Report. It contains recommendations. Hence the 2008 Campaign. The full SACROHN report would, if made public, enable governments to evaluate their policies about crohns. |
