BBC WALES 25 March 1035 pm. Week in Week out show. Latest news. MAP in River Water! |
|
I watched this excellent show live. It featured Professor John Hermon Taylor. There were descriptions of how crohns affected people in Cardiff and details of research that the Professor had performed. The programme detailed the history of Professor Taylor’s interest in crohns disease over 25 years. There were a couple of a couple of interesting points, first that scientists were saying that crohns disease was mainly genetic. If this is so why in the incidence of crohns disease increasing so rapidly?, surely genes cannot double in 8 years like crohns hospital episodes have. A further problem is a cluster of crohns disease cases in Cardiff, why should this be? The suggestion is that the River Taff that flows through the city was contaminated with MAP. It came from cows upstream that had Johnes Disease. River water had been tested and Professor Hermon-Taylor revealed that 30% of samples contained MAP. Are droplets blowing in the wind? In July 2001, David Bowe, my former MEP, tabled a written question to the European Parliament about MAP (E-1970/1) He pointed out that under an EC directive MAP was a classified as a pathogen, and asked if the Commission had made any plans to remove it from the food chain? A lengthy reply was given by Mrs Diamantopoulou. She replied that MAP is classified as “group 2 biological agent” which “can cause human disease and might be a hazard to workers; it is unlikely to spread to the community; There is often effective prophylaxis or treatment available” She went on to say that the Commission would closely follow the situation and will immediately take appropriate measures to protect the safety of consumers if grounds for concern emerge.”
