David Bowe was a member of the European Parliament. Maybe his family was once called Bowel, maybe not. I used to get some jokes from doctors, about Mr Procters’ proctitis. David eventually called me Mr Crohns. His first written question E-1970/01, simply asserted that MAP is classified as a pathogen and asked the EC(European Commission) if there were plan to get it out of the food chain. The question did not include the word crohns but the reply did. It said a link had not been established, but they agreed it is a human pathogen under their rules. David asked another question, E-1093/01 enquiring about findings of a study the EC had done on possible links between crohns and paratuberculosis. The reply said there were concerns about a link, so increased research would be done. They were to research a quality of life project called SACROHN, that would look at the improvement of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of sarcoidosis and crohns disease. The project started on 1 October 2000 and was to conclude in October 2003. Sarcoidosis and crohns seem to run in families, but this project is the only one to research the link? David then asked an oral question on 1/9/2002 H-0583/02, asking if the EC could support an increase in pasteurization time of milk to 25 seconds. The EC said that it could not , relying on the proposition that it was not necessary. David was not re– elected, I asked his colleague Linda McAvan if she could get the results of the Sacrohn Project ? She tabled a written question to the EC 24 May 2005) P-1900/05. The reply said that the study has not provided any definitive link between MAP infection and crohns disease, there was a genetic susceptibility kinked to a gene called NOD2/CARD15. Further research?
